Steve Arlett

Steve Arlett

Steve Arlett passed away on February 1 after battling Alzheimer's disease.  Steve came to our 50th reunion with his son, Rob.  Steve attended Piedmont with us and went to college at the Naval Academy in Annapolis, Maryland.  He graduated from the Naval Postgraduate School in Monterey, earning his Masters in Telecommunications Management.

Steve served in the Navy for 21 years and enjoyed a second career as a mathematics teacher and coach at St. Joseph Notre Dame High School where he taught 15 years.  Steve remembered how well Mr. Worth drew circles on the blackboard back at Piedmont High.

His sister Pam was kind enough to share her story of her last visit with Steve.  "I'm glad that when I last visited Steve in October 2013, he was almost like his old self, same sweet laugh, wonderful manners, fun to talk to with a great memory of all past events though not for any recent events.  We went to the cemetery to visit our sister, Suzanne's grave, then visited with the people in our Estrella house - they let us walk all through, reminiscing and taking pictures."

Steve is survived by his sister Pam Garzini, three adopted children, four step children and their families and numerous nieces and nephews.  He was preceded in death by his sister, Suzanne and his step son, Glenn.  Pam adds "He was the absolute best big brother a girl could have."  We will all miss Steve.

Steve was from the earliest time I met him at Havens elementary school quiet but self assured. He was one of those who early in life are favored with a clear perception of what he  wished to do with his life and he then went on to fulfill his ambition to be a military officer. He didn't apparrently seek the limelight like his father who was a well regarded radio sportscaster for the California Golden Bears football team for a great many years. I used to listen to his father's broadcasts and wonder how his son veered so far from his parental model. Steve was a good man who embodied the finest traditions honor and public service, RIP

I am so saddened to hear of Steve's death.  I had always hoped to make it to one of the reunions and run into him.  I read his obituary and was not surprised to hear that he was a gentle and generous man.  I am so sorry that it was Alzheimers that took him.  There is no illness that is easy but Alzheimers seems especially cruel.

I ran into Steve and his son at the Oakland Airport about 20 years after we graduated.  He was in his Navy dress whites and looked every bit the officer.  I was on my way to San Diego to visit my son in college and he was on his way back to Hawaii where he was posted at the time.  We had a very brief visit but it has stayed in my memory all these years later.  My sympathy goes out to his family in this tragic loss.  He was far too young to leave this earth.
