I will never forget Colleen, she was my neighbor and friend. I spent fun weekend sleep overs in our pre teen and early teen years at her house, her parents and grandmother were always so extra special nice. Colleens mother worked at The Little Daisy dress shop on Lakeshore Ave and always helped me find the right size Lanz dress. I loved Lanz clothes...lol.... Colleen phoned me out of the blue one Sat night and I happened to be visiting at my parents house on Portsmouth Rd, she wanted to stop by, say hello, and show me her new puppy she had just received for her birthday... an adorable tiny Chihuahua. She told me she had Lukemia and she was engaged to be married, we visited briefly...I never saw Colleen again, she died from Lukemia about 6 months  after she was married.

Rest in Peace Colleen.

I need to add how shocked and saddened  I was to hear of Colleens passing and how bad I felt for her parents, they were such a close loving family.

Thank you Louise for your loving rememberance of Collen. I remeber the three of us and Diane, then, Rout having some outrageous times together. A time for closeness, adventure, fun and full teenagehood for sure.

Collen was such a life-loving fun being, I remember being suprised at hearing of her death. It impacted me to let me know "we never know".

I haven't seen Diane Rout since June 1962, maybe once but maybe not at all.  I don't really remembered how we reconnected but the advantages of our digital age has simplified "keeping in touch".  Diane is who she has always been and there has always been something about the core of Di that connected the two of us.  Her mom and three sisters also live very in the same community.  The whole family was a huge part of my youth.

When Lynda King passed away, I received an email from Di with the news; I was shocked and realized I needed to seize the moment and visit my friend before it was too late.  Bought a ticket, hopped on a plane and flew to the Pacific Northwest for a long weekend visit with Di and her husband of 52 years, John Vitale.

It was like no time had passed and we had a delightful weekend of pouring over Clan-O-Logs and reading the good wishes of our classmates.  We both were friends of Colleen, we remembered her fondly.

Thank you Louise and Denys for your thoughts and rememberances.

Thank you Sally for your comment. Where in the Northwest are Diane and John?

I am up there every fall to visit family and if it worked I would love to hook up.

Patti Hinch and I enjoyed time together in Portland when she was still well.

Blessings,

Denys

I remember one day when Colleen and I were both caught chewing gum in a 7th or 8th grade class. Our punishment was to sit in the vice-principal's office and chew a huge wad of gum for an hour after school. We laughed and had a good time until our jaws were sore from the chewing.

I remember the sadness I felt when I heard she had died at the young age of 20.

RIP Colleen.

Denys, to answer your question; Di and Johnny live in Anacortes, WA.  They have only been their about 8 month; they moved up from Carlsbad.  They have had an amazing life, with a great life plan!  Gosh, we had such fun!

I loved reading all of the comments about Colleen.  We were good friends throughout our high school years and had many, many memorable moments.  I can vividly remember learning how to do the Stroll up in her bedroom.  Just one of many dances we practiced before going out amongst our classmates in hopes of not looking like fools.  We had her record player blasting almost every time I was at her house.  Her grandmother was wonderful.  She never said a word to us about the noise.

Colleen also had rheumatoid arthritis.  I remember that as a new bride she was so upset that she couldn't wear her wedding ring due to the swelling in her fingers.  I was expecting my second baby and she would drive me to doctor appointments and I would then drive her to her doctor appointments.  Kent Delventhal called me to tell me that she had died.  I remember getting his phone call and not believing the news.  I was devastated.  I always assumed that she had died from rheumatoid arthritis as I never heard leukemia mentioned.  As the years passed and I learned more about rheumatoid arthritis I wondered what she had really died from but had no one to ask. It makes so much more sense knowing about the leukemia. I'm happy to know that she is remembered fondly by her classmates.

I loved meeting up with Sally Walker McKnight and we had a great week-end together.  We picked up where we left off those many, many years ago.  I also appreciate the effort she made to come up and see us.

How do I contact you Denys?  I would love to see you if you come up to the Pacific Northwest.
